Systemic Anti-Indigenous Racism in the RCMP
Both Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the current Commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police have acknowledged that systemic racism exists in Canada’s national police service. Steeped in colonialist practices dating back to the agency’s creation, this unchecked system has led to disproportionately high instances of violence and fatal uses of force against Indigenous peoples by RCMP officers across the country.
